At first we were accidentally gluten free, we just wanted to use premium ingredients and that’s it. Ingredients with no filler or palm oil because it’s cheaper.
Once we started doing Maker’s Markets we were asked a lot if we were gluten free. When I looked some more at the ingredients in some of the high street brands I was staggered and shocked in equal measure to see the amount of products that used gluten in their ingredients. Most of the time, except for when eating KitKat etc there is absolutely no need to use gluten. With the price of cocoa increasing substantially some companies have used this as an opportunity to change their ingredients to maintain or increase prices. We decided that we want to carry on making the very best chocolates we can and that means sticking to the premium ingredients, although this means an increase in price this is one of our core values.
We were also asked if our chocolates were suitable for coeliacs. At first some of our ingredients did contain precautionary allergy labelling. We simply changed our ingredients so that all our products are suitable for coeliacs. We check the ingredients label as products arrive to make sure there aren’t any ingredient changes. However we knew that wasn’t enough.
Our chocolate workshop is separate to our house and domestic kitchen and is a gluten free zone. All our utensils, bowls and other equipment is used solely in and for our gluten free products. This means that we have done everything possible to keep this area uncontaminated from anything that could create trace gluten.
We think that we’ve got an amazing product and the Free From Awards agree with us. We won silver medal in the Easter luxury chocolates (Tesco and Booja Booja got gold) and have now made it to the 2025 Grand Final! Not bad for a small company wanting to create amazing chocolates!
